Technology

The Technology of Haunted Worlds is very much in line with a sort of “Hard Scifi” approach, with a few allowances for the fantastical… which are then taken to their logical extremes. Haunted Worlds is set nearly 2,000 years Post Diaspora, an unknown amount of time in the future from the present day.

Einstein-Rosen Bridge "Portals"

Developed in 568 Pre-Diaspora by researchers at MIT, the Einstein-Rosen Bridge is a wormhole between two or more points in space. These are known commonly as Gates and by this point in the story are used for everything from power transmission to inter-stellar travel. Though, to this day, it's impossible to send any biological matter through a gate without it being heavily shielded from the radiation within.

Gate Networks

 There are presently 4 primary and countless ancillary gate networks in use by Humanity, collectively providing the foundation for all modern society.

Gt

 The Gt, or Transit Gate, network is a series of large, point to point wormholes that enables travel from one planetary system to another. These gates are behemoths of engineering with a diameter most frequently measured in kilometers.  Traversing one of these gates, however, is risky for anyone going inside.  Due to the effects of radiation within the wormholes, any crewed vessel must be heavily shielded to prevent all biological life from a swift, brutal death.

Gf

 The Gf, or Fuel Gate, network actually consists of multiple ancillary networks specialized in the delivery of pure substances.  Pipelines running through these networks deliver hydrazine, oxygen, and basically any other fluid resource necessary for the running and operation of reactors, space ships, and society at large.  Each network can be subscribed to by customers wishing to gain access to a resource on the network, much as utilities function in the present day.  Each ancillary network is numbered with the atomic number of the element or chemical it delivers.  For example, the network for Hydrogen is Gf<sub>1</sub>, while water is Gf<sub>1,1,8</sub>.

Gp

 Used less and less on the large scale as cold fusion becomes more portable and reliable, this is a beamed power relay network.  Most small portable electronics are connected to this network, allowing something like a cell phone or prosthetic limb to remain powered as long as it's charging brick is connected to a source of power, no matter where you are in relation to it.

Gs

 The first widescale use of gates was for transmitting data, making this the oldest of the 4 networks.  Humanity still uses classic radio EM to transmit voice, video, and data as they always have.  By broadcasting the signals directly into a nearly microscopic gateway built into the transceivers themselves, they can bypass pesky things such as light lag.  The biggest drawback that remains unsolvable is the effects of time dilation when two nodes on the network are at extreme velocities relative to each other. Though for most communications this is not much of an issue.
